Toby jugs are drinking vessels made of glazed clay or porcelain that are fashioned into the likeness of merry characters and historical figures. They were once widely used in bars and taverns across Europe and the United States. They originated in England during the middle of the 1700s, and by the end of the 19th century, they had spread to France, Germany, the United States, and other parts of the world.
This museum was established by Stephen M. Mullins, a lifelong jug connoisseur who passed away in 2019. It is home to the world’s largest collection of Toby jugs, which numbers more than 8,000 pieces and was named after him. Read more about the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian in another post.
